Wat een geweldige ervaring was het, om met 46 (!) lopers, een jaar lang te trainen en ons klaar te stomen voor de New York City Marathon. ‘s Ochtends om 9 uur waren we klaar om te gaan, en om in Wave 1 te wachten op het startschot, en te luisteren naar Sinatra’s New York New York, alvorens ons te storten op deze bijzondere race. Emoties overvielen velen van ons, en niets hield ons nog tegen om deze 42 kilometer en 195 meter te gaan trotseren.
De New Yorkers, alle vrijwilligers, en het publiek langs de route is werkelijk geweldig, ze gillen, schreeuwen en kijken je naar de finish. Maar onze grootste steun waren toch wel onze eigen (meegereisde) Nederlandse supporters, onze partners, ofwel ‘The VHV Cheering Commitee’!
Ze reisden door heel de stad om ons aan te moedigden, Brooklyn, Manhatten, Harlem, Central Park en natuurlijk de Finish. Geweldig dat jullie er voor ons waren.
De ‘post-race-drinks; op de Rooftopbar in het hotel, was vol ontlading, daarbij werden alle renners euforisch verwelkomd als ze na elkaar de bar binnen kwamen, en onder het tonen van We are the Champions, kwam Jasper van Ouwerkerk als laatste met medaille binnen! Voor niemand was opgeven een optie, en zeker niet omdat we zeer serieus gesteund werden.
Jullie als donateurs, hebben voor ons een verschil gemaakt. Door jullie steun en dankzij jullie gulle donaties hebben we met een VHV event het aller hoogste NETTO bedrag ooit op gehaald (sinds de oprichtging van de VHV)
Door jullie en jullie geloof in ons hebben we bij elkaar ruim 165.000 Euro opgehaald voor het Leontienhuis!

This year our group was huge, a total of 46 runners, all well prepared and ready to go; we stampeded through the Corrals to the start in WAVE 1, of the 48th New York City Marathon. What a great moment, all together listening to Franks Sinatra, overcoming nerves and emotions and ready to go! We all where determined to finish this Race and to overcome the physical endurance of this Epic distance!
The New Yorkers, the volunteers and the crowd were fantastic. They truly support and motivate you. But the biggest help was from our own Cheering Crowd, the VHV Cheering Committee!! They cheered in Brooklyn, on 1st Ave, in Central Park and at the finish line. They really 'made the difference’, they yelled, screamed, cried, waited, and waited until all of us passed the blue finish line. Without our own Cheering Committee, we wouldn’t have finished. Thank you so much!!!
Of course quitting was never an option, not just because we are not quitters, but also because we were ''paid the price’’. By finishing this beautiful race, we could raise a lot of money for our charity Het Leontienhuis; and so we did!! Because of you, the believe in us runners and your donations, together we raised over €165.000,- for Het Leontienhuis!
